Synopsis

Wetlands are the world’s fastest-disappearing ecosystems. They are vanishing three times faster than forests. Many plant and animal species found in wetland areas are threatened with extinction. In Poland, wetlands still covered a significant part of the country as recently as the mid-20th century. From a historical perspective, it must be acknowledged that these areas were not managed wisely. Drainage and land-reclamation practices carried out in the last century—aimed at drying land and expanding areas for agricultural production—disrupted water regimes and, as a result, the natural ability of landscapes to retain water. Systemic solutions are needed, along with broad educational efforts, so that everyone can recognize the benefits of protecting wetlands, which are crucial to the future of our entire planet.
