Synopsis

The origin of the terraces can be certainly traced back to the need for arable land, which was scarcely available in the hills and in the mountains, in particular in our areas, and where the so-called banks, the slopes, had to be worked.
Terraces were fundamental in the history of our civilisation and our local culture, since they allowed farming that otherwise would not have existed, and so they became extraordinary and essential forms of subsistence for populations.

The abandonment of the terraces and the construction of dry-stone walls took place at different times depending on the areas and the changes that occurred on the economic and social level. The fact that industrialisation became increasingly prevalent, convincing many farmers to abandon the land, caused this type of building, which significantly acted on nature, to be progressively abandoned.
